First Of All, What Does Grade 6 Think About AI?
Before moving on to the facts and perspectives, it is always nice to know what the common Grade 6 student/teacher thinks about Artificial Intelligence. We have organised some anonymous results from our form which has been answered by 48 people. Thank you to all who participated in the form.
As you can see, the results are very mixed. Since the first question is a topic that is heavily debated, we got pretty mixed answers. But, when we look at the next question, you start to see that people don't know much about AI, or rather the types of AI. Could that be why people think AI is a bad thing? Because they don't know how many things that they use every day use AI? Maybe people make decisions quickly because of the media because it's clear that we, as Grade 6 don't know much. Here are some more results from the form below.
Just to let you know, the last 4 bars were listed in the other category. The thing is, that many people didn't know that some of the items they listed already use AI. For example, security. Let's use online security for example. The leaders in this market are Symantec, with their Norton Security and McAfee. McAfee uses deep learning to increase the efficiency of security operations. Symantec also uses Artificial Intelligence in a similar way. In fact, most of the places people chose, already use AI. Could this be affecting peoples perspectives on AI? Because they don't know that much about it? Maybe, if people knew more about AI, they would think differently.

1. Lack Of Knowledge About Subject
If people don't know enough about the topic, they can easily believe stuff that is wrong or think it is bad
2. Media
Media can sometimes tell people the wrong thing. Take aviation for example. Half of it is just rubbish, and they really basically have no idea what they're talking about (Joel is an aviation enthusiast and wrote this, that's why he knows so much). It's not the same with AI, it's mostly true, but a lot of it is based on perspective
3. How AI Is Used
People may see something on an update to an anti-virus, for example, saying that they are now protecting PC's against some viruses that use AI. My initial reaction would be, hey, at least it now protects us against it, but other people might overreact and think that AI is terrible, even if it is used against the viruses themselves.
Perspective: conclusion
So we all have different perspectives, but maybe, AI is misunderstood. Of course, AI might take away jobs, but they will also create some in the technology market. To be honest, working with AI might be quite an interesting and well-paying career. Although, the downsides are that people are ultimately going to lose jobs that they were educated for and AI just might someday take over the world. Maybe we are not open-minded enough for change yet, but maybe we will be ready to accept change soon. We don't know how the future will work out yet, but all we know is that AI is going to play a big role in it.
